Sept. 22, 1873, Robert Maitland Brereton, an Englishman, descended from the ancient Bereton family. A chart of this family is owned by a friend in North Vancouver, born a Brereton--it traces the family back to Norman Conquest time. Mr. Brereton was a promenent Civil Engineer and did a stupendous piece of work in bilding a railroad in India, in early times. The compiler owned a full page newspaper account of him, his family, coat-of-arms, and--unfortunately--loaned it to a Mr. Brereton, who also resided in North Vancouver. It was never returned. Mrs. Brereton was a member of the Maltby Association. He died about 1911, in Portland, Oregon, where they resided. She d. May 6, 1917, at Portland. Mrs. Brereton furnished many records.

In August 1910, on our way to Vancouver, Mr. and Mrs. Brereton entertained my husband and myself at luncheon at his club. Max Foster, the author, and a 2nd cousin of Mrs. Brereton, was also present. Mr. Brereton had instructed the Chef in making a real India curry, and it was definitely the best I ever had, before or since.
